Book review: Unspoken by Dee Henderson

 Unspoken

by:Dee Henderson

Charlotte Graham is at the center of the most famous kidnapping in Chicago history.

The task force of Fbi and local cops found her two abductors, killed them, rescued her, but it took four very long years. The fact she was found less than three miles from her home, had been there the entire time, haunts them. She's changed her identity, found a profession she loves, and rebuilt her life.

She's never said a word--to the cops, to her doctors, to family--about those four years.

A family legacy has brought her back to Chicago where a reporter is writing a book about the kidnapping. The cops who worked the case are cooperating with him. Her options are limited: Hope the reporter doesn't find the full truth, or break her silence about what happened. And her silence is what has protected her family for years.

Bryce Bishop doesn't know her past, he only knows she has coins to sell from her grandfather's estate--and that the FBI director for the Chicago office made the introduction. The more he gets to know Charlotte, the more interested he becomes, an interest encouraged by those closest to her. But nothing else is working in his favor--she's decided she is single for life, she struggles with her faith, and she's willing to forego a huge inheritance to keep her privacy. She's not giving him much of an opening to work with.

Charlotte wants to trust him. She needs to tell him what happened. Because a crime cops thought was solved, has only opened another chapter. . .

Age Group: 17 and up
what reason?: For romance, suspense, and dealing with hard issues.

I was given this book and since I love mysteries, I jumped right in!! I was not disappointed!
I'm a reader who likes to read something different every once and awhile. And this was no exception! When I began reading I had no idea that Bryce was going to be a coin dealer! And, as I'm not really interested in coins, some of it went over my head. He was a little to perfect at times in my opinion... Just because he was always thinking through every thing he said, and I don't really think it fit his character. Do you really think there are guys like that?
Charlotte, on the other hand, was a great character! I thought every thing about her was pretty much spot on with what she should be feeling.  I was worried that they were going to be delving into Charlotte's kid-napping and have some things that I wouldn't want to read, but, Dee didn't really go very far with it at all. Charlotte was a artist too, so they did some talking on different types of papers and pencils that she liked and well, I'm no artist!  I could only raise my eye brows and read on. Other then that I thought the book was perfect for those of us who likes a good mystery with a little bit of romance! In my opinion this book was written for mature audiences and I would not recommend it for anyone under 17.
 ~Spoilers!!!~
If your worried about the romance~
The two main characters came together in a sweet way that you don't see very often. I'm not sure if I totally agree with them getting married so she could have the money. That seemed a little funny to me, because he didn't love her, and She didn't love him. But as he was a christian he knew that if he married her, he would have to stay with her "Until death do they part" Dee kept the book clean even with the romance. There was of course snuggling and quite a bit of kissing (They get married... you can't avoid kissing.)

If your wondering where God fit in~
Charlotte has a hard time with her faith throughout the book. Which I thought was very realistic in light of what she went through. She defiantly wasn't your cookie-cutter christian who saw the good in everything. She questioned her faith and came to the right conclusion. Bryce on the other hand prayed throughout different parts of the book, he tried to help Charlotte deal with her problem that she was having with God, also it is discovered that he has a prayer journal in the back of his work folder.

If your worried about how "Dark" the book may be~
There was  a character and his wife that were looking into another case. It was a little chilling for my taste. It had to do with a baby and that type of stuff was hard to read. Dee didn't make it darker then it needed to be though. And they did solve it. There is also a few different things implied that happened during Charlotte's kidnapping and a picture that shows up but nothing goes into detail and the picture is not discribed. Ultimately it is a mystery book for mature audiences.

Random other things found in the book.~
Charlotte did say that she used to be an alcoholic, but that she had given it up and needed Bryce to help make sure holiday drinks and such things were never "spiked". Lest she become addicted again.
Also, Charlotte and her sister do not have a close relationship...They kind of avoid each other because of the kidnapping and her sisters husband is a gambler. So since Charlotte is rich her sister doesn't really want anything to do with her.

~End of spoilers!~

In the end I applaud Dee for her ability to take things such as kidnapping, cold cases and romance and turn it into a clean,God-honoring, fascinating read.

My favorite character: Either Paul or John.

My favorite line: The older man had just returned with the ransom money. He tossed the duffel bag into the back of the van with us.'Your dad paid this, he'll pay more. Only one of you is getting out of this van.' The words had no more left his mouth than Ruth planted her feet in my ribs and shoved me out of the van.

My favorite page: 433

Thanks for reading!!

I hope you enjoyed this book review.. I probably started with a really hard book to review, since it is written by a well known christian author. But, oh well!!

Hope Marie~

  1. I tried to post this on your upcoming reviews page, but it wouldn't let me.

Read the Hunger Games, so very curious to see your review of this book! And I've heard lots of rather BAD things about Merchant's Daughter, so looking forward to that one too. :P

As I recall, you wanted to see my review of Captive of Raven Castle by Jessica Greyson. Here's the Goodreads link. You can use it as a guest review if you want to fill up some space on your blog, but I won't be mad if you don't. It's your call! :D .
