Review of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
The Hunger Games
By: Suzanne Collins
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of
Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. Long
ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of
the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl
to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games," a
fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who
lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death
sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games. The
terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one
thing is constant: kill or be killed.
Age group: 14 and up
What reason?: Violence and Romance
So between the movies and the books I'm going to smother you with reviews!
So, I saw the movie first because it was on Netflix and a friend asked me if I had seen it, after saying no I got a shocked look and gasp of disbelief... Still I didn't watch it. Then big brother #2 says "Hope, have you seen The Hunger Games?" Me: "Nope." Big bro #2 "You should watch it I think you would like it! Me: "Isn't it kinda, like, dark?" Big bro #2: "Yes and No....You'll have to decide for yourself I guess."
That's my advice to you guys too!
I have my own opinions, you have to decide for yourself!
I really loved this book, and thats really weird to say because of what the book is about! But the book isn't about the romance or the love triangle although people try to make it about that. It's about Katniss and her quest to protect those she loves! There is violence in it (Which you know) and thats why I put the age up to 14 because it does get a little graphic...
~Spoilers!~
If your worried about romance: There are a few kisses and during the games Peeta and Katniss sleep in the same cave together. Fully clothed and nothing happens! It is relatively clean and by that I mean I didn't have to skip any of the reading.
If your worried about the violence: Well if you've heard anything about the Hunger Games you know that the books are violent. It is graphic. Which is why I say you need to decide for yourself. There is knifing, shooting with arrows, spears, Braking necks and brute strength being used to kill. There is a character that is very cruel. Also nearer to the end mutts come and attack a person it goes on for awhile until Katniss ends it (for said person) with an arrow. It is dark. But for me, I guess I...Well the point of the book is that in Katniss's world there is no value for human life and how horrifying that is, and how she tries to stop it.
If your worried about the overall cleanness of the book: There were no bad words (That I can remember and I'm usually really good at remembering those!) There is parts where Katniss is getting ready for things (While at the capital) where she is said to be naked. And during the games Katniss needs to take off some of Peeta's clothes so she can patch up his leg, She leaves on as much of his clothes as possible. They do not go into detail. Also there is one character that is known to be a drunk.
~End of spoilers!~
Overall like I said you need to come to your own conclusion!
My favorite Character: Katniss! (Bet you didn't see that one coming!)
My favorite line: I press the three middle fingers of my left hand against my lips and hold them out in her direction. Then I walk away without looking back.
My favorite page: 257 or 421

I love your explanation for the violence--my sentiments, exactly! Also, your favorite line just shredded my heart in 2 seconds flat (again). It is beautiful, though.
